Portland Cement

Latex additives for gas migration control
Latex additives for gas migration control, with a list of suppliers. Read more
Portland cement chemistry and hydration reactions
The first in a series of articles covers cement chemical notation, Portland cement components and their hydration reactions. Read more
Chemical shrinkage of hydraulic binders
The second in a series of articles gives an explanation of chemical shrinkage, with two examples, and a method of measuring chemical shrinkage of hydraulic binders. Read more
Bulk volume changes of Portland cement systems
The third article in the series discusses how the effect of chemical shrinkage on the bulk volume changes will depend significantly on the conditions during setting, and considerations for oil well cementing. Read more
Expanding agents for improved zonal isolation
The final article in the series explains how expanding agents can be used to reduce the risk of loss of zonal isolation in both annular and plug configurations. Read more

Thermoset Resins

Volume changes during setting of thermoset resins
An article explaining the chemical shrinkage that occurs during the curing or crosslinking of thermoset resins, and the implications for zonal isolation. Read more
Thermoset resins: the importance of thermal properties for zonal isolation
When resin systems cure significant heat is liberated in a relatively short time which can led to a significant increase in temperature of the resin and surrounding material (casing, cement, rock). This increase in temperature combined with the fact that the thermal expansion coefficient of thermoset resins is much higher (>4x) than that of steel or rock may lead to loss of zonal isolation. Drilling fluids

Derivation of cuttings density calculation
Derivation of the formula to determine cuttings density from mud balance measurements. Read more
